In 1953 Bob and Dorothy Richardson, along with the help of family and friends,
started J & R Furniture on Main Street in Shenandoah Iowa. In 1974, after many
years of hard work and a couple Main Street locations, they opened the doors to the
current location on Nishna Road.
Bob built this building with money borrowed from the bank on a handshake and
determination. After all these years Dorothy has become the "go to" person for
coordinating furniture styles and fabrics, many people ask for her by name. All four
of Bob and Dorothy's sons grew up in the store and have worked in the furniture
store and are still involved in the store to different degrees.
Bob and Dorothy are finally taking more time for themselves. But J & R Furniture is
still a family business and is still committed to high quality brands and high quality
service.
